Christmas

Merry Christmas on this warm, windy, rainy Louisville day!

This year was the first official year that I didn’t spend Christmas with anyone but the three adorable rat-children I have. Home was too far away, and I had other offers but ultimately decided that staying was for the best. In all seriousness, it is just another day and I’m happy that all of my family and friends are happy and healthy!

Before I give my annual “Blog about what I got” list, I figure giving a recap up the last couple of days is in order.

I got out of work early on Wednesday (after sleeping through my alarm 2 hours… whoops) and ended up going over to Jimmy Johns for a sub. I used to work for Publix for years, so I’m kind of a loyal fan. But it really is the best grocery store I have ever been too. Whole Foods and the like are the only thing that compare, but even then price wise they don’t. When I’m home in St. Augustine, I stock up on Publix brand stuff especially now that they have so much more Greenwise stuff then when I lived there…anyways, off topic, but what that story leads to is the fact that I absolutely LOVE Publix subs, and Jimmy Johns is the closest in taste to it. Sorry, I’m long winded. Sadly, I ate the whole entire thing, even though I wasn’t hungry after half.

Christmas Eve I went out for a few last things for my Christmas dinner at Whole Foods. I also kind of wanted to see how bad it was considering the Whole Foods here is by the two biggest malls, which are side-by-side straddling the highway. It was crazy. I ended up grabbing stuff at the salad bar for a late lunch. I’m addicted! I came back and ended up watching some old videos of Antishay’s on Youtube. I always find new ideas or tips, I love watching her journey, even though her’s was a lot shorter than mine is, it’s nice to see that it’s the same for everyone.

I ended the night with my sorta, semi-annual Love Actually viewing at Christmas. That’s such a fantastic movie; I keep forgetting how awesome it is until I watch it again.

I woke up this morning to the wind HOWLING. I made some blueberry spelt muffins from the Whole Foods website and while they were in the oven I opened up my stocking. It had:

  • Fingerless hobo gloves (which I’m wearing as I type)
  • Fingerless arm glove with thumb hole
  • Socks
  • Target and iTunes gift cards
  • Pocky
  • Eggnog chocolate bar
  • Lip gloss
  • Sugar lip scrub

I then opened up my gifts. I got

  • Clarisonic face scrub gadget thing (my mom raves about it)
  • Bluetooth music/call receiver for my car
  • Cat calendar
  • Single serve blender
  • Antennae so I can get some over the air channels
  • Wii Fit Plus
  • Costco membership

This year was fun, I didn’t really ask for anything so everything was kind of a surprise, and I like that it was stuff that is practical, yet I would have never spent money on it for myself. Michael (my brother) didn’t know I wasn’t going to be home till he got there, so his stuff for me will be sent up soon.

Everyone enjoyed my gifts, which I’m happy about. I got my mom the Absolutely Fabulous complete series (which she says was on the other day, and was thinking about how much she liked that show and hadn’t seen it in years), my brother LOVED his b-day gift of The X-Men cartoon series volume 1, which he texted me immediately when he opened it the other day, and really liked the iPod speakers I got him, and my dad opened my Mario Wii game before he opened the Wii.

I’d say my first alone Christmas wasn’t so bad. Now onto the New Year and those pesky resolutions…

Accidental Vegetarian

I don’t know how I did it, but I ended up spending the day eating nothing but veggies, and I liked it!

Back when I was in middle school I stopped eating red meat and pork. I kept it up until I went back to college in 2003. I even spent a year without chicken, which I’m suprised I was able to last as long. By that time I had been toying with the idea of eating whatever again, and the lack of really any variety in terms of non-meat products in the school cafeteria sealed the deal. I didn’t stop eating the meat because of animal rights (although it did have a small effect), I did it more for the health benefits.

Ever since then I’ve been wanting to go back to that diet. I don’t think I could ever become fully vegetarian, although I would love it if I could. Now, along with the health benefits of that diet/lifestyle, I also am seriously considering it more for the animal reasons. Funny how things change!

I’ve always been into almost everything vegetarian, which is why I don’t understand why I haven’t tried to do it again. I love meat substitutes (and regularly have them in place of the real thing), tofu, almost any veggie, and am obsessed with all things vegetarian when I go out to eat (especially if they have portabella mushrooms, I’m addicted to those things!).

Today I was lazy after an early morning trip to the post office to pick up a package, I didn’t feel like making a real meal. I ended up grabbing a couple of granola bars, pumpkin pie yogurt, some more granola w/pumpkin seeds, clementines, bananas, and an apple. I have a stash of pretezels at work that I incoporated into the meal. I know it wasn’t the best nutritionally well-rounded, but it could have been a whole lot worse. I thought I would get hungry because of the lack of protein, but it really was just the right amount. Then tonight I ended up eating a Boca spicky chikin patty with some potato rounds. So good!

I’ve been noticing that I have been accidently having vegetarian days a lot, and I like it. Hopefully I’ll continue it until finally I’m letting go of red meat completely!

Holiday parties: UGH

So let’s talk about this weekend….

I consumed (gulp) 1,868 calories in alcohol.

Yep. And that’s just an estimate, I don’t really remember the count of Blue Moons I had on Friday so it could be even more. 98% of those calories came from Friday. Not to mention dips, chips, and random sweets from the party. Add a full breakfast spread of Panera goodies, egg casseroles, Charlie’s amaretto cheesecake (which won first place in the cakes/pies division), and other misc sweets from the holiday breakfast Friday morning; and then add the same kind of stuff from my cousin’s annual Ugliest X-Mas Sweater party that occurred yesterday.

Suffice to say, this was not a good weekend at all for any sort of control on my eating. Nor was it a good weekend to control my crazy drunken state. Not. Good.

Today is another day, learn from my mistakes of yesterday for today.

In attempt to purchase my last Christmas gift with everyone else in the world, I ran into T.J. Maxx/Homegoods and found these cute Fit and Fresh containers. I ended up getting the salad shaker and the lunch on the go set. They are awesome! They both come with ice packs that stay in the container. The salad shaker is fantastic. The salad dressing sits in the container at the top, and when you turn the dial the dressing falls through to the salad below. I love them! You can find them at: http://www.fit-fresh.com/ I know that Target sells them, but I got both of them at T.J. Maxx for about 15 dollars. Well worth the price since I do bring my lunch to work every day, and mostly it is salads or sandwiches.

After a stop at Bed Bath and Beyond, I headed over to get some things at Whole Foods. I decided to get lunch/dinner there in attempts to getting back into a healthier eating pace, and to detox from the weekend. I ended up getting a salad from the bar there. I’ve never gotten one, and I really can’t say why I haven’t. It’s was so ridiculously good! I’m obsessed with random salads, I normally bring a salad to lunch and it ends up having the base of lettuce, but the toppings of whatever is left in my fridge from leftovers, to things almost going bad.

The salad contained:

  • Spring Mix
  • Green Beans
  • Fried Tofu
  • Carrots
  • Hummus
  • Curry Pasta Salad
  • The BEST marinated mushrooms
  • Bulgar w/ apples
  • Turkey pieces
  • Monterey Jack cheese
  • A generous amount of white bean tuna salad

There may have been some other random things that I can’t remember. Well worth the 6 dollars I spent on it. Paired with my favorite Izze: sparkling blackberry. Baby steps into getting back on track!

Now to return to watching my new Alton Brown DVDs 🙂 Hope all is well with everyone!

Baby steps

Wow…

Has it really been that long since the last time I’ve posted on here? I mean, I know that no one is reading this to keep track, but I can’t help but feel a little let down at myself. Blah. What started as just not posting after a couple of days of the internet going out as soon as I wanted to post, turned into weeks of me being to lazy to open the iPhone app and type up any sort of post.

Well, that needs to change.

Things have been slowing down, especially at work. I just completed a 24 hour play festival that I acted in, and at work we are doing the ridiculously boring task of sorting through a lot of the props.

But really, in all honesty, I can’t complain all that much. I have a fantastic (thank-my-lucky-stars-how-did-I-get-so-freaking-lucky) job, fantastic friends, and three adorable little rats as my new roomies 🙂

What I’m not happy with AT ALL is my inablity to get back into the place I was at the begining of the summer, getting back on track on watching what I eat and exercising. I have a couple of times gone down to the gym we have here with Heather, but nothing crazy or routine. My eating habits are completely off track and horrible. I only have myself to blame, and really want to get back in to better habits.

Baby steps.

You know how the previous post had a list of goals that I wanted to accomplish? Well, I still want to do that, but I need to not rush into it so fast. I need to get into my head that if I just take things a day at a time, things will come easier. So right now I’m going to work on getting my water requirements in. I was doing really good with that about a week ago, and I don’t know what happened. Things crashed and I stopped, and then I just felt horrible and “hung over” all week.

I also have to force myself to track my foods. I have to, I have to, I have to. It’s the only things that helped me during the summer to really focus on what I ate and to stop myself from mindless eating.

So that’s what I’m going to do, for right now. Once I get into a good habit with those, then I can focus on other things.
